Thanksgiving & Black Friday

Welcome everybody!

Today I read an article about Black Friday and Thanks Giving after we talked about it in our in english lesson. I thought you might be interested because it's not very common in Austria and maybe you are as much interested in other cultures as I. I looked for a video about Black Friday and all I found were crazy people running into shops. So I asked myself what's the meaning of this holiday and I found my answers in the internet.

What is Black Friday?

The 29th of November marks the beginning of the busy shopping season during which most consumers typically start their Christmas shopping. Doorcrashers, special deals and heavy discounts are common on this special day. Some very ambitious customers have even been known to camp out overnight in order to secure a place in line at their favorite store. Can you imagine how it looks like when so many people run into the same shop? It must be a real disaster! On the one hand their are cheap things but is it worth it? That's the question.

Thanks Giving

I also looked for an article about Thanks Giving and there were many interesting informations in the internet. So I will give you some informations about it.

Thanksgiving is a holiday in the USA and Canada when people give thanks. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November in the USA and on the second Monday of October in Canada. It is a four-day holiday over the weekend. Families and friends usually eat a special meal together (usually with a turkey as the main dish). This meal also usually includes mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, several casseroles and stuffing. The food eaten today for Thanksgiving is very different from the food that was eaten at the First Thanksgiving in 1621.

I hope you enjoyed reading my post and I could give you a little idea of these two Holidays.

Remember, remember, the fith of November!

Hello everyone!

Today I heard that the Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated in England! I didn't really know what it stands for so I decided to search for the meaning in the internet and I got resolutions.

So what is Guy Fawkes Day? I will tell you.

Guy Fawkes was born as a Protestant. When he got sixteen he changed to Catholicism and after a short time he went to the Spanish army. Co-conspirators Robert Catesby, Thomas Winter, Thomas Percy and John Wright thought that he would be the ideal Person to help them to perform their plan (the infamous "Gunpowder Plot"). Fawkes' henchmen were very busy Catholics who belived that by bringing down the government, they might usher a new era of Catholicism in Protestant England. He and his partners made a plan. They wanted to explode gunpowder under Parliament during a state opening, when King James I, his queen, and other family members and government leaders were inside.

But the plan didn't worked! A Lord warned King James about the plot and the the police found the gunpowder. Fawkes and his partners were arrested or killed. Parliament immediately established Nov. 5 as a day of celebration.

The day is now celebrated with bonfires and fireworks.

bad neighbours

Hi everybody!

I was watching a video on youtube the other day and it was about bad neighbours. I thought you might be interested because maybe you have bad neighbours too.

The video shows people who shout at their neighbours and do terrible things to them. Basically it shows how to act in such a situation. It is also mentioned which things are okay to do in your neighbourhood and which things not. What shocked me most was that people could be so annoying and disrespectable to their neighbours. I agree when people say that bad neighbours are a 'no-go'. I am not sure what 'perfect' neighbours should be like but I think they should be at least  peacefully and friendly.

In my opinion there is no perfect neighbour and sometimes it is okay to celebrate a little party with music but it shouldn't be standard in the neighbourhood. That would be really disturbing. People should be outgoing and friendly.

I am very happy with my neighbourhood because they are always friendly. There is only one neighbour who is a little bit disturbing sometimes when he plays on his accordion all day long. But I don't really care because everybody has his hobbys.

Katja

my holidays

Hello everyone!

My best friend, her family and me went for five days to a beautiful little lake named Gleinkersee. You can see the lake in the photo. It was a wonderful week and the weather was almost perfect! On Saturday it was a little bit too hot because of 38 °C. Kathi and I lied in a small tent near the lake and her parents slept in their bus. The lake was very cold but that was really suitable as a refreshment. We had so much fun, all in all it was a great holiday.

The rest of my summer vacations I spent mostly of the time at lakes like the Ausee or the Perger See near Schwertberg. That was very practical because we could drive their by our mopeds. At evening my friends and me often went to partys or watched a film in the cinema or at home. Sometimes we just lied next to the pool and ate ice cream. I loved that lazy days. I was not very often at home and my parents were not so happy about this but they accepted it. I worked for a few days at a farm with Steffanie and Kathi, it was hard but sometimes even funny. I really enjoyed my summer! It was a great time.

Greetings,
Katja
